Komminist (Kommy) Weldemariam IBM Research | Africa, Nairobi, Kenya (k.weldemariam@ke.ibm.com). Kommy is a Research Manager and Research Scientist at IBM Research Africa. He holds B.S. degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2003, M.Tech. from India Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2006 and Ph.D. from Trento University, Italy in 2009/10. He has over a decade of multidisciplinary experience driving solutions in software systems, security, business process reengineering, cognitive systems, project and people management.
Currently, Kommy is a Technology lead responsible for creating core cognitive fabric by combining machine learning and artificial intelligence systems with human interaction and by externalizing all these capabilities on the Cloud relevant to the African context in Education, Healthcare, Financial Inclusions, among others. He has demonstrated academic and professional dexterity by working in both public and private sectors in Africa, Europe, United States of America, Canada and India.
He has co-authored over 55 scientific articles, filed over 25 patents and has served as scientific committee and organizer for various conferences and workshops worldwide. He is a recipient of several awards including the 2015 Next Einstein Fellowship award, best paper awards, and the Experienced Level and Managerial Recognition awards from IBM.
